Restoring the Tower
Our Plan
2019 Condition Assessment
This study found significant patterns of cracking, veneer delamination, rust jacking, and other challenges. Based on the findings, the project team developed a preliminary scope of work and budget estimate. Some emergency repairs to stabilize the brick veneer were completed in 2019 at the time.
Cost Estimate
The preliminary cost estimate developed as part of the study is being used as the budget for this project. The total estimated project cost is $3.2 million, which includes architectural and engineer fees and contingency. Some funding has been secured: the church won a highly competitive Save America’s Treasures grant in the amount of $500,000 from the National Parks Service, a prestigious $500,000 Challenge Grant from the Jeffris Family Foundation, and a $250,000 grant from the National Fund for Sacred Places. Major donors outside of the congregation have contributed to this project, while at the same time many individuals have given at a level in which they feel comfortable.
Scope of Work
In developing the scope of work and the strategies for repair it was based on, the project team worked from broad principles and goals:
Tower will be fully renovated in an aesthetically appropriate way to a structurally sound condition in a manner that adheres to the Secretary of the Interior’s Standards for Rehabilitation;
Work will fully address—to the extent possible—both the problems needing repair, and the root causes of the damage;
Work will be long-lasting, and designed in a manner and with materials that would not require ongoing maintenance to maintain integrity.
